“One interesting thing about language is how a single word or phrase can mean vastly different things to different people. Take two-step, for instance. Mention the term in a dance club, then again at a honky-tonk, and you’ll get a quick lesson in where twains don’t meet. Denizens of both places will agree, however, that the music each interpretation refers to is necessary for the ol’ do-si-do.
Would-be opposites get their due on “Rub-N-Tug Mix,” the sleeper hit single from the duo Wild Rumpus’s dance EP, Musical Blaze-Up (Bitches Brew). A collaboration between clubland eminence DJ Cosmo and downtown string picker Gary Lucas, “Rub” is one of four surprisingly cohesive remixes that mash up dubby bass, rustic guitar and banjo, Echoplex and more; it’s as if Cosmo took both meanings of two-step and joined them at the feet, where any open-minded reveler can relate. The duo’s theories get tested in a live setting tonight, where Lucas’s front-porch guitar picking is bound to make for a memorable installment of François K’s “Deep Space” party.”
